After recovering from the shock of what had occured, the king asked the Martyr, “Tell me, George, how did you survive from the vicious tortures and from the horrible poisons? Are you hiding the truth? Come, tell us where do you find this supernatural power?”
George answered “Don’t think, Emperor, that I was saved because of human ability. That which saved me was the Grace and the power of my Christ. He has promised that whatever deadly poison his servants drink, He will protect them. He has made the blind see. He has made the crippled walk. He has risen the dead. He has worked so many more miracles. As you can see, then, it wasn’t hard for Him to protect me, his humble servant.”
“What do you have to say about all this, Athanasius?” Diocletian asked the magician.
“My king, I think this man mocks you,” answered Athanasius. “Our gods have given us so many things, but we have never seen nor heard of the dead being brought to life again so far. This man says that his God can resurrect the dead. If this is indeed true, then my honored king, we should believe that his God is real. There is a tomb near here of a man that has been dead for a while now. If he can, let him bring this dead man to life.”
The Emperor liked this idea and ordered the Saint to do as Athanasius suggested. St. George knelt and prayed wholeheartedly for Christ to perform His miracle so that the idolators would believe in His holy name.
Before he finished his prayer, a loud thunderous sound was heard everywhere frightening all who were present. To their amazement, the dead man rose and stood amongst them. Fearfully the people yelled, “Truly George’s God is great!” Athanasius fell down at the feet of the Saint and said, “Your God is truly all powerful. From this point on, I will give up all my evil magic and believe in Christ with all my soul.”
The Emperor was the only one that was not convinced. He ordered for Athanasius and the resurrected man to be killed because they preached that Christ was the only true God. And so it was that the two Martyrs of Christ gained everlasting rewards in Paradise.
