Their angry voices were heard as far as the palace where Diocletian’s wife, Empress Alexandra, a new Christian herself, resided. She ran to the temple after she heard the shouts, not afraid to confess her love for Christ. She said to her husband with determination, “Foolish and disrespectful king! Your mind is in the dark and that is why you can not see the truth and admit that Christ is the true God.”
When Diocletian heard these words from his wife, he lost his sanity and couldn’t control his actions. He ordered his wife to be put in prison along with George.
He later made the final condemning decision, “The Christian George and the Empress Alexandra will be put to death by the sword because they have disobeyed my authority and ridiculed our gods.”
While in prison, the queen prayed to God. She later sat on a rock, tired from standing, and closed her eyes giving her spirit up peacefully to Christ. When the time came for St. George to be executed, the soldiers led him to the place where the verdict would take place. He prayed to God to save all the people and then bending his head, he accepted death from the executioners.
His holy body was taken by a faithful follower to Palestine, the home of his mother. The Christians buried him with great honors. Since that time, St. George has never stopped protecting and helping Christians. He listens to our prayers from Heaven, gets on his horse, and quickly rides to console every hurt soul that asks for his help.
